What Exactly is FORS Compliance?

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is a voluntary accreditation scheme for fleet operators that aims to raise the level of quality within fleet operations and to demonstrate which operators are reaching its high standards.

Who’s it for?

FORS compliance is voluntary and open to any company operating a fleet including vans, lorries, mini-buses and coaches.

Some background

More than 300,000 vans and lorries take to London’s roads every day, delivering goods and services to the Capital. Whether they are welcomed, loathed or merely tolerated, the fact is they play a vital part in London’s economy. Unfortunately, they also contribute to air pollution, and congestion and collisions on the roads, many of which result in serious or even fatal injuries. Commercial vehicle activities are governed by numerous regulations and agencies. Until three years ago, however, there was no single scheme to help van and lorry operators comply. That all changed in 2008 when Transport for London (TfL) introduced FORS.

The Aim

The aim of FORS is to have one scheme, which encompasses all aspects of safety, fuel efficiency, economic operations and vehicle emissions, making roads safer, cleaner and less congested.

FORS Accreditation Explained

Accreditation comes in 3 levels. Bronze, Silver and Gold. To become FORS accredited you must prove that you meet the criteria set out in the FORS standards and this is checked during a formal company audit carried out on your premises by an independent FORS auditor. See the FORS Standard for details.

Peace of mind and winning contracts

For vehicle operators, FORS offers peace of mind that they are meeting their legislative requirements, as well as helping to increase efficiency, reduce costs and win work. Accreditation can provide the tools to help you become safer, greener and more efficient. It is an excellent way to prove to existing and potential clients your credentials as a high-performing operator who adheres to high-quality standards.

After a detailed vetting procedure qualifying companies can become a certified FORS Associate. Kits-n-Bits is one of those few companies in South Wales. “The FORS process of accreditation and continuous improvements makes sound business sense and gives customers peace of mind that the organisation they contract with takes safety and compliance seriously. The added benefit of accident reduction and public recognition of high standards means the potential to stand out from others when competing for new business.”
