Operators with vehicles entering London have once again been reminded that they should register for a free safety permit before the London Direct Vision Standard becomes enforceable on 31st March this year.
Christina Calderato, TfL’s Head of Transport Strategy and Planning, said:
“With less than two months to go until enforcement begins, our latest figures show that there are still many HGV operators working in London who have not applied for a free safety permit.
We encourage them to apply as soon as possible to ensure there is enough time for their application to be processed.”
What is the London Direct Vision Standard?
The standard is a requirement of all HGVs over 12 tonnes that travel within the M25 that measures how easy it is for drivers to see directly through their cab window. TFL data has shown that Heavy Goods Vehicles are disproportionately involved in accidents resulting in fatalities. This includes 41% of accidents involving cyclists and 19% involving pedestrians.
The Standard came into effectiveness in October 2020, but will be actively enforced at the end of March 2021.
How does the London Direct Vision Standard work?
The LDVS gives a star rating to vehicles which is based on how much the driver can see through their cab window. Rating goes from zero stars (the lowest) up to five stars (rated excellent). Vehicles that are rated from 1-5 stars can apply for a permit, whilst those rated zero will need to provide additional evidence that their vehicle has been fitted with technology to improve driver vision.
London’s new Direct Vision Standard, which assigns vehicles a star rating based on how much the driver can see through their cab window, comes into effect on March 1st after which all owners of HGVs over 12 tonnes will need to display a valid permit to continue operating in the capital.

Owners should check Transport for London’s online vehicle registration check to see if the star rating of their vehicle is appropriate and apply for a safety permit.
