There were over 113,000 vehicle thefts in the UK last year. That’s quite an astounding statistic. For many of us, our car is the second only to our homes in terms of purchases that we make. We need to protect them with a GPS vehicle tracker.
Think about your response to a car alarm. Do you run outside to see what’s happening? Call the police? Or sit and wait hoping that it is soon silenced? A car alarm provides a superb deterrent and if broken into, will raise the alarm. But this isn’t always enough.
A GPS vehicle tracker provides an additional safety level. Whilst it won’t stop theft, it will track your vehicle if it is stolen increasing your chances of recovery.
What does a GPS car tracker do?
It does what it says on the tin. A vehicle GPS tracker device is installed into the vehicle and uses GPS satellites to track the vehicle and its position at all times. All of the gathered information is stored in the installed device. This information is then transmitted via the mobile network to the cloud which enables you to access the information on your phone, tablet or desktop computer.
What information does a GPS car tracker collect?
GPS vehicle trackers collect a plethora of information. As a minimum, information about the location of the vehicle is provided and other information such as routes taken, speeds and stops can all be identified.
More sophisticated systems will alert you if your car is being driven at an unusual time of the day, or appears to be travelling in an unusual area. They may also relay information about your driving so that you can identify efficiencies; for example, if the car has been idling for a significant amount of time, you may choose to save fuel by switching your engine off when in traffic.
And it goes further; the engine doesn’t have to be started for your tracker to operate. Thatcham approved trackers will monitor your battery level (which helps warn of tampering) and provide early warning if the vehicle is being towed.

Do you need a vehicle tracker?
No, you don’t, but with 113,000 vehicle thefts last year, we’d recommend that you install a vehicle tracker to mitigate this risk. We’re also seeing increasing numbers of insurers request the installation of a vehicle tracker, to give them a better likelihood of vehicle retrieval if it is stolen. In some cases, insurance premiums are reduced with the installation of a vehicle tracker.
