The LDVS is due to come into enforcement on 1st March 2021 as Transport for London ignores calls from the haulage industry to extend the enforcement date once again. The scheme, with an originally planned enforcement date of 26th October 2020, was delayed in April this year due to the Coronavirus outbreak, but it will come into effect early next year.
The London Direct Vision Standard will impact hauliers moving through the City of London, thus these businesses must understand and comply with the regulation. Many are already compliant or are moving towards compliance but confirmation from TfL that enforcement will not be extended again means that all hauliers and HGV transportation affected will need to ensure that they are ready by 1st March next year.
The Standard has been developed to protect pedestrians and road users within the English capital and aims for zero road accidents including large vehicles within 20 years.
What is the London Direct Vision Standard?
The standard is a measure of how much a driver can see from their cab without the use of mirrors (hence, Direct Vision). Vehicles are rated and those with a high rating are then given a permit for the next year which allows them to drive within the City of London. Those caught without a permit will be subject to a fine.
What if your vehicles don’t meet the Direct Vision Standard?
Don’t worry, you may still apply for a permit through the Safe System. Similar to FORS and CLOCS, Safe System requires the installation devices that improve indirect vision. These are then rated and permits granted to those meeting the system standard.
How does the London Direct Vision Standard impact HGV vehicles?
If a vehicle doesn’t meet the Direct Vision Standard or the Safe System requirements, it may be fined when entering the City of London. However, compliance does not have to be complicated and time-consuming. Kits-n-Bits will assess your heavy vehicles and then supply and install the necessary devices to obtain your permit and help to ensure that your vehicles can move through London with the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists protected. And to make things even more pain-free, we’ll come to you and install on-site.
