SIAN’S WALK OR WATER

We are incredibly privileged and proud to sponsor Sian’s walk or Water this year.

It’s all about raising funds for Velindre Cancer Centre to support the care that they provide to patients, and to support Velindre’s ongoing research.  The Velindre Leading Lights Appeal is raising money to fund specialist cancer nurses and the Velindre Pink Appeal is raising money to fund breast cancer research and care.

Sian is a very special member of the Kits-n-Bits family and we would love it if you could join us on Saturday 19th September 2015. We’ll be leaving the Rhoose Lifeguard Clubhouse at 1:00pm to walk along the Welsh Coastal Path to Jackson’s Bay, Barry Island.

This is Sian’s story.

My Story so far – Sian Laycock

In 2011 I returned home after a fantastic family holiday to receive the devastating news that I had breast cancer (1st August 2011). My children were then 18 months, 3 and 4 years and I was only 38! In the weeks that followed I underwent two operations which was then followed by 5 months of chemotherapy and a year of hormone treatment.

My life returned back to normality and in 2013 I completed the Brownsea Island 6.5km Open Water Swim and raised over £1,356.50 for Breast Cancer Care.
In August 2013 I took part in the British Masters Surf Lifesaving Championships at Saunton Sands for Rhoose Surf Lifesaving Club and achieved two Gold medals in Board & Swim and Bronze in the Ski Race.
In 2014 I set myself another challenge of swimming the 10km River Dart Swim raising a further £1,000+ for Cardiff & Vale ULHB (Cardiff Breast Centre), however the following day after completing this swim I ended up in A&E with a fractured rib.
In the months that followed after ‘many’ tests the devastating news was confirmed that I now have secondary breast cancer….. Although secondary breast cancer isn’t curable, with daily advances in medicine I am still hopeful for many many more years with the people I love ☺
My family and friends have been AMAZING throughout and I feel so lucky to have such amazing people around me. I am the proudest Mother, Wife, Sister, Daughter ever. I don’t say it enough but I love you all and will equally do anything for them x
My treatment has been constant and an emotional roller coaster. My consultant, The Staff & My Specialist Breast Nurse at Velindre have eased the burden of coping with my illness. Their support has been invaluable. This is why it was easy to choose my charities to thank.
I would also like to thank Sarah Thomas for having the initial fundraising idea, my brother Nick & Claire (Sister in law) and all their friends for organising this event & our club friends at Llantwit, Rhoose and Jacksons Bay Surf Lifesaving Clubs for supporting. I know you’ve wanted to help throughout my diagnosis / treatment and this idea has blown me away – so thoughtful x
